Truffle dog training teaches a dog to find truffles growing underground by scent, then give a clear signal at the spot so you can dig them up. Almost any breed with a working nose can learn. Most dogs are capable of searching for and alerting to a target odour within 8 to 12 weeks of short, structured sessions.
Confident, reliable finds in real truffle woodland take a bit longer. It is possible within your first season of truffle hunting, but often it takes several seasons for a dog to truly hone its skills. It is not a quick fix. Even with the right system, it rewards many sessions, steady repetition, and patience from the handler.
In the UK, truffle dogs are usually trained to find the summer truffle (Tuber aestivum), the Burgundy or autumn truffle (Tuber uncinatum) and the winter truffle (Tuber brumale). These often grow in association certain trees species including beech, oak and hazel, typically in woodland on chalky, free-draining soils. Knowing the trees and ground that hold truffles is part of the craft, and it is covered as the training moves into real hunting.
Ben Sweet built the BSH Truffle Dog Training System to bring two worlds together. Traditional truffle dog training has real value: knowing the land, the trees and the environment, learning to source reliable truffle ground, and working as a team with your dog. But as a way to actually train the dog, it misses much of what we now understand about how dogs learn. It can be slower and less reliable, and can leave dogs harder to control in the field, sometimes even eating what they find.
On the other side sits modern, science-backed training, the kind used to develop professional detection dogs. BSH takes the best of both: the craft and land knowledge of traditional truffle hunting, paired with clear, reward-based training that sets the dog and handler up properly. It is a step-by-step system, but an adaptable one.
It works with any dog. A keen working-type breed, motivated by food, toys or play, will usually have an easier time and can go further. But a lower-drive dog can learn this too. Much of the skill is the handler getting the most out of the dog in front of them, whatever its drive. No two dogs are the same, and no two handlers learn the same way, so the system flexes around that rather than forcing everyone down one rigid path.
The biggest difference is where BSH starts. Most scent-work and truffle classes jump straight to odour. BSH begins with the Build phase, setting the dog and handler up for success first. Skipping it is the single most common reason people get stuck later. It is the route Ben used with his own dog, Buddy.

See Upcoming DaysThree phases, always in this order. Each one exists because skipping it is where most training falls apart.
Before your dog ever meets truffle odour, you build the foundations: clear communication between you and the dog, genuine drive for the work, structured play as the training fuel, and the confidence to work in new places. Most systems rush past this. BSH front-loads it, because a dog without drive and clarity cannot sustain committed searching later.
Now the foundations get channelled into truffle work. We introduce a target search odour and teach the dog to tell it apart from everything else, building difficulty gradually in a controlled setting. We proof against distractions, develop systematic search patterns, and train handler and dog mechanics together. Then we hone the alert signal: a clear, controlled response the moment your dog finds the source.
In most cases the hunt phase is where we move to real truffle odour and open out into wider area searches. We take everything into the field: variable terrain, real conditions, and the ethics of legal harvesting. We run mock hunts in real woodland, then build to the final test, a genuine search for wild truffles, learning to adapt as weather and terrain shift.

Yes. Most of the dogs trained with the BSH System started as ordinary family pets, not working lines. Here are real words from owners whose dogs found their first truffles.
Ben has made my year, and my dog's, complete. Freddy has now finally found his first Brumale and Aestivum in the wild. Not in competition, not hidden by me. In the wild.
Buddy kicked off the search with a big truffle find within the first minute. He was quite sensational, doing laps at high speed around the woods. Extraordinary to think his nose was able to work so well as he was going past so fast.
Oscar was let loose to search on his own. Great news, he found his first truffle and I was super proud! Thank you Ben and Buddy for your extreme patience and sharing your knowledge and passion.
We were lucky enough to go out with Ben and Buddy, and I was amazed when Angus found his first truffles. Very much looking forward to trying again soon.
A great course to learn the basics to train your dog to find truffles, followed by some lovely truffle-inspired dishes. A great day out and highly recommended.
A terrific day of learning about truffle hunting with our dogs. Ben and Buddy did us proud, showed us how the experienced dog works, which enabled our dogs to find real truffles. Lunch in the woodland, a delicious foraged mushroom soup with shaved truffle. Highly recommended.
Almost any dog with a working nose can learn, and that is most dogs. Spaniels, labradors, terriers, poodles, collies and crossbreeds have all done truffle work. Expectations shift from breed to breed and dog to dog, but the breed matters far less than the order you train things in.
There is no single best breed. Working-type dogs with strong food or toy drive, such as spaniels, labradors and poodles, often find it easiest, but the order you train things in matters far more than breed. Plenty of ordinary family pets learn to find truffles with the BSH System.
You can start the foundations at almost any age. Young puppies begin with play, confidence and simple scent games; older dogs move through the early work quickly if they already have focus and drive. There is no single right age to begin.
Very unlikely. Adult and older dogs learn truffle work well, and many started as fully grown family pets. A younger dog gives you a longer runway, but an adult with existing play drive often progresses faster through the early phases.
Very little to start. Your dog, some high-value rewards, and a bit of space are enough for the first sessions. Training scent and a few simple containers come in as you progress, and the free playbook walks you through what you actually need.
Yes. The BSH System is built for ordinary owners, not just specialists. It teaches you the handler mechanics step by step, in plain English, so no prior scent-work or detection experience is needed.
It depends on the route. The Truffle Dog Playbook is free, the Truffle Dog Club is free to join, private 1-to-1 online coaching starts at £150, in-person sessions are around £350, and the full 90-Day Masterclass is £997. Private Shadow Days, real hunts alongside Ben, start from £295. You can start free and step up when you are ready.

BSH is the step-by-step method behind all Truffle Forager training. It runs in three phases: Build, Search and Hunt. It combines old-school truffle craft with modern, science-backed detection training into one sequence that still stays flexible enough for any dog.
Most dogs reach a reliable alert signal within 8 to 12 weeks of short, structured sessions. Confident finds in real woodland take longer: a first season of fieldwork, and often several seasons to truly hone the craft. It is not a quick fix, and it rewards steady, patient practice.
Yes. Whether you download the free playbook, join the Club, book coaching, attend a workshop or take the full Masterclass, you are training with the same BSH System. The only difference is how much support you get and how fast you move.
Both, deliberately. The dog learns to search and signal; you learn timing, reward mechanics, and how to read your dog. Most training problems are handler problems in disguise, which is why the system teaches the human as thoroughly as the dog.
Build is the foundation phase: communication, drive, structured play and confidence, before your dog ever meets truffle odour. Most scent-work and truffle classes skip straight to odour, which is the single most common reason people get stuck later. BSH front-loads it on purpose.
In the early phases we usually work with a controlled target search odour, which keeps the learning clean and repeatable. In most cases the Hunt phase is where we transition to real truffle odour and move into wider area searches and real woodland.
Nearly always it traces back to skipped foundations: not enough drive, unclear communication, or difficulty raised too fast. That is exactly what the Build phase exists to fix. A single coaching call is often enough to spot the gap and get things moving again.
Both work. The Build and Search phases translate very well to online coaching, where your training footage is reviewed and your mechanics corrected on a call. In-person time adds most value at the Hunt phase, in real woodland. Many owners combine the two.
Truffle Forager is based in the South Downs, in the UK. In-person sessions and workshops run across the South Downs, and private sessions can also be held at your own location.
Yes. Private in-person sessions can be held at your own location as well as in the South Downs. Travel beyond the local area is arranged case by case, so get in touch with where you are and we will work it out.
No. The Build and Search phases are done in everyday spaces: your home, garden or a quiet patch of grass. You only need access to woodland later, in the Hunt phase, and workshops and experience days give you that in real settings.
Yes. The online routes, the playbook, the Club, coaching and the Masterclass, work wherever you are in the UK, or beyond. Only the in-person sessions and workshops are tied to a location.
No. Truffle sites are kept confidential, always. Protecting locations is part of how we work and part of foraging responsibly. What we teach you is how to train a dog that can find them, not where anyone else's truffles are.
Yes, with the landowner's permission. In the UK truffles belong to the landowner, so you always need permission before hunting on any land that is not your own. Responsible harvesting, taking only what you need and protecting the site for next season, is part of what the training covers.
A Shadow Day is a private morning spent hunting real truffles alongside Ben and his dog Buddy in working woodland. It is not a class or a demonstration: your dog joins a live hunt and you get direct feedback as the day unfolds. It is the natural next step once your dog has been through the training, the final piece of the puzzle that takes a trained dog from practice searches to genuine wild finds. Prices start from £295.
It is a free 15-minute call to say hello, talk about you and your dog, and help you work out which training route fits best. It is not a coaching or training session, just a friendly chat to point you in the right direction with no pressure.
